Denmark and Greenland Ministers: US Negotiations on Greenland Far From Agreement

Foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland stated that negotiations with the US about the island's future have not progressed, and an agreement is still far away. Despite an improved diplomatic dialogue, both sides emphasize that the path to a solution remains long.

Denmark and Greenland Ministers: US Negotiations on Greenland Far From Agreement

The Foreign Minister of Greenland, Vivian Motzfeldt, and the Foreign Minister of Denmark, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, stated on Saturday that ongoing negotiations with the United States have not progressed, and they are far from reaching an agreement. Speaking at a trilateral press conference with Canada for the opening of the first Canadian consulate in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, Motzfeldt acknowledged that the situation has improved compared to a month ago, citing the establishment of a diplomatic channel and direct dialogue with Washington. However, she indicated that Greenland is 'not yet where we want to be' in the negotiations and that 'there is a long way to go, so it is too early to say where we will end up.' Rasmussen, for his part, said: 'we have made it very clear from the beginning that any solution must respect our red lines,' and added that he believes 'it is possible to find a solution that respects our red lines.' 'We are not conducting those negotiations in an open space,' he said, and added that 'they have fought to have them in a room' where the parties involved can speak to each other properly, as learned by the Argentine News Agency. Greenland, the world's largest island, is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, while Copenhagen retains authority over its defense and foreign policy. Since returning to office in 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to 'acquire' Greenland, an action that has been met with rejection across Europe. However, Rasmussen refused to reveal details about the negotiations. Canada and France opened consulates in Nuuk on Friday as gestures of solidarity with Greenland and its Inuit population.
